Frank Ghery “Easy Edges”

Frank Ghery’s [Easy Edges] collection( 1970’s) is a good example of corrugated cardboard use. And this collection inspired California based architect Ball-Nogues Studio

Ball-Nogues Studio

This is an art installation by Ball-Nogues Studio: Rip Curl Canyon at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston in 2006. Rip Curl Canyon represents a mythical landscape in the American West. This piece was commissioned by the Rice Gallery in collaboration with the exhibition, The Modern West: American Landscape, 1890-1950.

This installation is fabricated with eight tons of industrially die-cut corrugated cardboard, laminating over 20,000 strips of curved, industrially die-cut corrugated cardboard in twelve days. Viewers were invited to explore the cardboard curves by climbing on the piece and walking underneath it. It is incredibly stong and capable of supporting the weight of several people. 2×4 plywood is used for it’s understructure.

IniAni Exterior

Another example of innovative application of corrugated cardboard is Ini Ani. Ini Ani is the cafe located in LES ( Lower East Side of Manhattan), designed by LTL architects

As many other Manhattan project, the project had low budget, site limitations and tight time frame. In order to meet these restrictions, LTL designed and built all of the finishes in the space – including the cardboard and cast plaster walls, lights, curtains, door handles, cor-ten door and window frames, front sign and all the furniture. Items and issues that might be problems were twisted into design opportunities.
